The Fisherman And The Steps To Riches

Last Saturday morning, I was walking on the beach wondering what I could tell you this week. When a beautiful demonstration of the steps to riches unfolded... right before my eyes.

I was on the Santa Monica Pier ( in sunny Southern California) when I saw a crowd of people standing next to a few fishermen. I walked over to take a look. A pretty large young man was fighting to reel in a fish that had taken his bait. It must have been a huge fish because the young fisherman was struggling hard and his fishing pole was wildly bending up and down (it was almost about to break). The fish, in an effort to break free, would dart to the left, then to the right.

After a few tense minutes the fish performed an advanced fish get-away routine.. he swam across several fishing lines... The young fisherman (in an effort to remain untangled from other fishing lines) began stepping under other fishermen's fishing lines and poles (this took real work because he was pretty hefty ). He rushed along the pier as the fish continued darting about. This fight was so hard and long that I knew it could NOT have been a regular fish. But I didn't think I'd see the...

Shadow of The Sea Monster

My eyes followed his fishing-line into the water and what I saw next was almost unfathomable. Suddenly I saw the eerie shadow of the creature. It not only swam left and right but it was diving deep into the waters then it would rush up to the surface... trying to break free. That's when, for a brief moment, I saw it's blurry, pale, white shadow. It looked about 5 feet wide and had a vampire bat shape. Blood, from the fishing hook, dripped from it's mouth. Actually, it was NOT a fish at all. And as quickly as the creature appeared, it disappeared deep into the ocean. And no one expected what happened next.

But before we get too far into the story...

Lets look at how this story relates to the steps to riches.

Lets rewind to the day before when the young fisherman prepared his bait and packed his fishing gear and set it by the door. He had a fishing pole and tackle box (filled with extra-hooks, weights, extra fishing lines and various tools). He obviously did some planning (Organized Planning - the Sixth Step To Riches).

And the young fisherman got up that morning and instead of sleeping in and watching cartoons he decided (decision -the seventh step to riches) to get up before the crack of dawn. He had his fishing line in the water. This, by itself, shows desire (the first step to riches). And the young man faithfully (faith - the 2nd step to riches) watched his fishing pole. Looking for the slightest sign that his bait was taken. And it was.

While the young fisherman struggled with the fish, his dad was proudly looked over his shoulder. His uncle attentively stood by with a net (master mind - the ninth step to riches).

Now let me ask you...

As the creature dove deep into the water the young man strained to hold on to his pole. People excitedly followed along as the young man struggled with the creature. During this event the young man's dad and uncle smiled with pride and excitement. But that's when a new thought shot through my mind...

What was this creature?

It turned out that I had seen the bottom of an elderly Bat Ray. It's size gave away its senior age - they can live as many as 20 years. Bat Rays scour the bottom of the ocean looking for shrimp and other small sea life. They're harmless to humans. As strange as it sounds, Bat Rays have families. So, like the young fisher man, this creature got up pretty early. And he was just trying to get food needed to survive. And just when he thought he had the food needed to survive... he was savagely hooked by the mouth.

It was the fishing line... it broke. The elderly creature had broken-free. The young fisherman and his family actually smiled.

I learned a lot that day. The young fisherman was already using the steps to riches. But the most powerful lesson was how fiercely that elderly creature used desire to win his freedom.
